An Introduction to Critical Thinking

The ability to think critically is sufficient for future generations. Those who don’t learn critical thinking will soon be left behind. The main reason for critical thinking lies in the quote by Clement and Lochhead, “[w]e should be teaching students how to think. Instead, we are teaching them what to think.” In an essence, today’s education does not adequately teach students, because it fails to teach them how to think effectively. It only teaches students the subject matter. However, the capability to think critically is important for young people to grow into responsible adults.

Without critical thinking, people would come to quick conclusions. They would not be able to approach a problem in the most efficient way. This could end up hindering their efforts or causing more damage than necessary. People need critical thinking to make all the important decisions in their lives. They cannot rely on just textbook thinking. I agree that the teachers and professors need to take it upon themselves to pass on this knowledge to their students. Teaching only "what to think" is just not good enough anymore.
